Each Olympic and Paralympic season not only provides a stage for the world’s best athletes to strut their stuff, but they also offer a prominent platform for branding and design. Tokyo 2020 is no exception, as the city mandated that official art posters be released along with the Games to establish a cultural legacy that will forever be associated with Tokyo 2020.

Twenty Tokyo 2020 art posters were created by artists from all over the world, from which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) chose the two most “iconic” designs—one to represent the Olympics and one to represent the Paralympics. It's also the first time a separate “Iconic Poster” has been chosen for the Paralympics.

The winning design for the Paralympic art poster comes from Japanese designer Goo Choki Par, selected for their stunning interpretation of the Games’ core concept, “Unity in Diversity.” Par’s design uses gestural, painterly shapes in rich hues to represent the solidarity and exuberance emblematic of the Paralympics.

The design expresses “the strong determination of the Para athletes who continue to challenge with optimism,” said Goo Choki Par to the IPC. “We would be happy if the Paralympic poster we designed for the Tokyo 2020 Games will inspire and motivate the athletes today as well as in the times to come.”

The design will live on well beyond the closing ceremonies on display at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and other museums around the globe.
