Debbie Millman’s new book Essential Principles of Graphic Design, is out now from Rotovision and HOW Books.  The book, “a visual and verbal journey of a project from concept to creation,” features spreads from the likes of Jakob Trollback and Stephen Doyle.

In the New York Times’s Campaign Stops blog, Steven Heller interviews Robert Grossman, veteran cartoonist, about his extensive catalog of satirical political comic strips, past and present. And check out the interview in The Nation with NYRB caricaturist David Levine, where he discusses and critiques political cartoons.

An Iranian image published in newspapers across the globe was discovered to be photoshopped to include an extra missile. Newspapers are now retracting the image and publishing the original photograph, retrieved by The Associated Press. Wired’s Danger Room has some funny variations that are popping up on the net. Over at Jandos Rothstein’s blog, Rothstein takes a look at trompe l’œil covers. Noting that it’s a risky endeavor, he also mentions his own venture into trompe l’œil, linking to a cover he designed for Washington City Paper “a jillion years ago.”   

The acquisition of Getty Images by Hellman & Friedman, a private equity firm, was finalized July 2.  Getty, the largest stock photo agency, sold for $2.4 billion. For more, read PRINT’s September/October 2007 article about Getty and the changing state of the stock photo industry.   

This Week In Design
 
Wall-E, the newest animated film from Pixar and Disney, opens in theaters today.  The ninth full-length film released by Disney-Pixar, Wall-E is a robot love story with a strong “Go Green” theme. Wall-E’s co-star and love-interest, Eve, might remind you of your favorite Apple gizmo – according to Fortune, Apple’s head designer, Jonathan Ive, was consulted in the creation of the character.
 
Among the lists of “New Classics” in Entertainment Weekly’s 1000th issue are the Top 25’s for movie posters and book covers since 1983. Check out the gallery of movie posters that made the cut, and the list of the best book covers (sadly, sans gallery, but SpeakUp put up several of the covers on their site.)
 
The New York Times writes about the custom typeface trend, with Peter Wayner’s article, “Down with Helvetica: Design Your Own Fonts.” In other type news, James West’s book Fifty Designers’ Current Favourite Typefaces is being sold to benefit the UNICEF’s fund for the Myanmar Cyclone disaster relief.
